There is a free camp for RVs and caravans in Richmond, but this lakeside caravan park is much nicer. The lake, built in 1994 as a community recreation area, is well stocked with fish, including barramundi, and has some good swimming beaches, a well-established bush tucker garden, fossil displays and a lovely walking track.

Cool off in Porcupine Gorge The rolling Mitchell grass plains of western Queensland can feel a bit flat and monotonous at times, so coming across Porcupine Gorge, a massive sandstone-walled canyon with a string of deep, permanent waterholes at the bottom of it, is a welcome diversion. In some sections the gorge is 150m deep. It is stunning after rain or late in the day, when the reflections are at their best. There is a swimming hole at the base of the rock formation known as the Pyramid. An easier option is the 10-minute stroll to the lookout over the gorge.

Snap a selfie with a 7m-high muttaburrasaurus You can’t drive through Hughenden without stopping to snap a photo posing in front of Mutt the Muttaburrasaurus. The original muttaburrasaurus, or parts of him, was found nearby in Muttaburra in 1963, and there’s a skeletal replica in the Flinders Discovery Centre in Hughenden, along with a display of other dinosaur bones and fossils.
